In contaminated land risk assessments, investigation of the water environment is important because contaminant transfer is largely controlled by water movements and because surface water bodies and groundwaters are sensitive to polluting incidents.

As part of an overall investigation of a contaminated site it may be necessary to sample groundwater at on- and off-site locations including static and flowing freshwater, sediments and wetland areas.
